Native American tribes, including the Washoe, have inhabited this region for centuries, utilizing its resources for sustenance and spiritual practices. While hiking, keep an eye out for signs of past human activity and appreciate the deep connection between people and this land. At Meiss Country Trailhead, you can embark on a variety of activities. Popular options include hiking to Lake Aloha, a stunning alpine lake nestled beneath granite peaks, or exploring the Desolation Wilderness on a longer backpacking trip. Fishing is permitted in many of the lakes and streams (with a valid California fishing license). In the winter, the area transforms into a snowshoeing and cross-country skiing paradise. Remember to check weather conditions and trail closures before heading out, and always practice Leave No Trace principles to protect this pristine environment.
